Food Day is a nationwide celebration and a movement for a healthy affordable, sustainable and fair food system. For more information visit www.foodday.org
At the culmination of another season at Fresh Start Farms-NH, we pause and reflect on all of the effort and contributions that the refugee producers, staff, youth interns, and volunteers have made towards the development of a more robust local food system that supports improved nutrition and quality of life for its stakeholders. This includes improved access to affordable healthful foods and increased food security among refugee and other low income families in Southern New Hampshire!
Here’s a snapshot of our just some of our work in 2013:
- 30 new American families increased food security via access to community garden plots at St. Anselms’ College, Liberty Gardens
- 20 beginning refugee farmers, increased their capacity for direct marketing via farmers’ markets, CSA, and the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program
- 360 different low-income customers purchased fresh fruits and vegetables via SNAP/EBT at one of ORIS’ neighborhood access points.
Now THAT is something to celebrate!
